Grey Space

Grey Space

Fixed Media Piece for Synthesized Ensemble

Composed by: Weston M-A Bernath

Video by: Alexander Arnold

Program Notes :

Grey Space explores the vast stillness of nature and space in a manner that voids itself of preconceived moods associated with modal/tonal relationships. This is achieved through the removal of the third and sixth scale degrees of the scale, neutralizing the possible major or minor tonality of the piece. Harmonic motion is nearly void in this work; the dominant harmony often appears in reduced forms at cadence points as well as harmonies spelled in fourths and seconds. Despite the swell in intensity and its corresponding new harmonic content fourth fifths into the piece, space and nature are often still. The piece ends much like it began; one marvels at the emptiness of the incomprehensible grey object always observing the Earth. The sun fades over the horizon as our attention is once again directed toward the grey space that is our cosmos and our most calm neighbor.

Performance Notes:

Grey Space is intended for performance with the corresponding video created by Alexander Arnold, however, can be performed without the video.
